The last thing you need when applying for a job is to email a resume that the employer cannot open. A file format is identified by the three-letter extension at the end. Whoever you send a resume to must have the same program on their computer that you used to create it. For example, if you used Microsoft Word, they should have a program that opens Microsoft Word. Some applications are capable of opening file types through conversion. If the receiver does not have a compatible word processor, your resume will appear as an unknown file type.

DOC File saved with the '.DOC' extension were likely created with Microsoft Word. WordPerfect also lets you save in this format and convert 'WPD' files to 'DOC.' This is the format requested by many employers, as most Windows computers have Word and are capable of opening it. The resume will be received in the same condition as it was created, which is important if you used any formatting. Look for 'Word 2003' or 'DOC' when saving the file. If you are not given any options while saving, choose 'Save As' instead of 'Save.'

DOCX This format is also used by Microsoft Word, but was first introduced with version 2007. Microsoft Office 2007 is backwards compatible, which means that the recipient can also use it to open files created with older versions of Word. But you cannot open DOCX files in Word 2003 unless you downloaded the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack. Saving as a DOCX format is necessary for utilizing the formatting features found in newer versions of Office. But you cannot assume that all businesses use Office 2007 or have installed the Compatibility Pack. Therefore, only use the DOCX format if you know the recipient has Office 2007 or higher, and if you wish to apply special formatting features to your resume.

Unfortunately, a stable internet connection can drop out right when you need it the most, in the middle of an important download. No matter if it's because of a bad router, a problem with your service provider or spotty 4G service, you're left with an incomplete file that's useless until the process is done. Once you've done all the hard work of getting everything up and running again, you're probably not looking to start that very large download over again from square one. Thankfully, you can restart your download right from where your service abandoned you, and it's very simple if you're using Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari and do-able but more complex in Chrome.

I'm now back to the beginning yet again, and it's very frustrating. It seems like every time it fails I first get a msg that msn.com or ESPN.com is not responding, followed invariably by the interrupted msg which is always followed by the download restart.
